Buckeye Chickens

Created right here in Ohio, the Buckeye is a heritage breed, dual purpose (meat & eggs) chicken. Originating from Buff Cochin, Barred Plymouth Rock and Black-breasted Red Game stock, this bird is notable for its active foraging, beautiful dark red plumage, cold weather hardiness, and egg laying ability. They are listed by The Livestock Conservancy as “Threatened”, but also by Slow Food’s Arc of Taste as a meal worth savoring!

Our laying flock of Buckeyes gets moved daily, following our ruminant herd and providing beneficial pest control. They are completely free-range on pasture, contained only by electric fence to keep them safe from predators. In addition to the food they forage for on their own, we supplement our flock with a non-GMO grain mix sourced from a local farmer less than 45 minutes from our farm.

The benefits of true free-range eggs are well documented, including being low in saturated fats, low in cholesterol, and high in beneficial omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals. All of these attributes directly affect our health, and reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes and obesity! One look at the firm whites and rich orange yolks of our eggs will reveal the distinct difference between them and the normal grocery store version.

Each dozen eggs purchased from Pastured Providence Farmstead comes with a little surprise, a special egg laid by our Ameraucana chickens (also known as “Easter Eggers”)! Just because the egg shell is blue or green, don’t throw it out… it hasn’t gone bad, that is just the way their eggs come out! Eggs are offered either through the Chillicothe Farmer’s Market, or direct off the farm.
